The Four Best Vitamins for Hair Growth

There are some things you should know about the four best vitamins for hair growth that other health experts aren’t mentioning. Find out what they are here.

1. Biotin: Top Vitamin for Hair Growth

One of the most commonly researched vitamins for hair loss is biotin. Biotin is even added in shampoos for hair growth. It’s a vitamin that can become deficient if you add a few raw eggs to your smoothies every day, as there’s a biotin-destroyer within the raw egg that is inactivated with cooking.

Hair growth is essential for people who are in certain situations. For example, those who are taking epilepsy medications commonly need help with hair growth. Those who have stomach stapling or resectioning of the small intestine and stomach are prone to biotin deficiencies and commonly suffer from hair loss. This is one of those things that doctors won’t mention before you have weight loss surgery.

Interestingly, in one study at a university in Spain, children who had been taking drugs for epilepsy had normal levels of zinc, biotin and biotinidase but some of them had hair loss. Biotinidase is the enzyme that determines how well biotin is working in the body. Even though their levels didn’t prove they were deficient in biotin, their hair growth started up again with supplements of 10 mg biotin and the hair loss stopped. The high dose of biotin was enough to kickstart the hair growth. (J Child Neurol 2011 Dec;26(12):1522-4.)

There’s something else you should know about this vitamin for hair growth. Most B complexes skimp on biotin, so if your B complex or multivitamin provided you with anything less than 10% of the 300 mcg needed, there’s a good chance that your hair issues developed as a result of low biotin. For optimum hair growth, you may want to ask your doctor to run biotin tests on you and take a supplement – or just take it anyway with the aid of a nutritionist’s advice.

2. Folic Acid

Folic acid is one of my four best vitamins for hair growth.

Adding folic acid to the diet of those who want to experience hair growth or notice their hair is weak may be a good idea because of this vitamin’s functions in the body. Folic acid is important for cell turnover for both the red blood cells as well as other proteins in the body. A deficiency influences how fast hair grows and how thick it grows.

If you’ve been on a weight loss diet or if you don’t eat liver or leafy dark green vegetables like spinach, it’s easy to end up with a deficiency and thus hair issues. Poultry and pork as well as grains contain some folic acid as well.

When people take folic acid supplements for hair growth, they may take up to 10 mg a day. The vitamin is water-soluble so any excess is flushed out of the body. Read more about Folic Acid in this article.

3. B Complex Vitamins Needed to Balance Hair Growth Vitamins

Whenever you take high amounts of any of the B vitamins that help hair growth, you’ll have to insure that the rest of the B vitamins are balanced. Otherwise, you’ll create another B vitamin deficiency. The most logical thing to do is to have your doctor/nutritionist team evaluate all your B vitamin levels and then supplement appropriately with all B vitamins, not just the top vitamins for hair growth.

If you don’t have a doctor or nutritionist willing to help, you can still do this yourself. Did you know that you can order your own blood tests online now without a doctor’s ‘permission’? One place to order them is Purchase of the tests allows you a short consultation with a doctor on staff at Life Extension Foundation (

4. Vitamin D – Upcoming Best Vitamin for Hair Growth

In the last five years, there’s been an explosion of research studies on vitamin D. This long-forgotten vitamin is connected to just about every illness and turns on the genes for about 1000 different diseases, some of them related to hair loss.

Although hair loss is not a characteristic of vitamin D deficiency, the vitamin controls mineral balance in the body through vitamin D receptors. Zinc is one of those minerals controlled by vitamin D, and a zinc deficiency can cause hair loss with hair growth returning when zinc levels are restored. (Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1997 Sep 2;94(18):9831-5.) Moreover, zinc regrows hair in those with hair loss when it balances the immune system cells CD4+ and CD8+. (Z Hautkr 1990 Feb;65(2):132-4.

In the next decade, we’ll discover more about this vitamin’s interaction and how it contributes to hair growth.

When you want faster hair growth, consider these top four vitamins but remember that the rest of the vitamins and minerals are important, too! All must be balanced for you to solve one challenge without creating another one.

  2. Lindsey says:

How long will it take for my hair to grow wonder what shampoos to use wonder if they will help my hair is a little bit above my shoulders don’t know how to make it grow fast I only go do a trim every 8 to 10 weeks I take 2 tablets of 1000 mg biotin twice a day find my hair too short had to cut a lot of it off because it was damaged how do I prevent it and how do I prevent breakage and split ends

    • Samantha says:

Trimming your hair doesn’t work the way people say, when you get a trim your basically just trimming all the hair growth you gained. Your hairs length gain is based on your roots not the ends(:

  3. LU says:

Many believe if you take this pill or that med, you will awake two days later and the results will be of a CHIA PET.
Do your research on biotin.. as far as what the max your body you be taking daily. You don’t know what kind of damage, you’re doing, if any. The time it will take for your hair to reach the floor depends upon many factors. DIET & HEALTH!

    Good luck

    • jen says:

Biotin doesn’t work that way, FYI. And if YOU actually knew about the product, it goes through your body every day.

  4. Lindsey says:

My hair is on my shoulders how can I get it to grow longer I have been taking the 5,000 McG the capsules once a day with a meal I have been taking it for over 6 months still not improving I take seizure medicine and antidepressant for anxiety I had damage before the damage is gone don’t know what vitamin is better and how to make my hair grow fast

    • isabel s. says:

      Hi Lindsey!
I’ve been taking also some all-natural vitamins with 5,000 mcg of biotion, but twice a day. As I doctor hairstylist recommended me and they are doing wonders for me. I really feel the difference!
I think seizure medicine and antidepressant for anxiety might be the reason why your hair is not growing as fast. I really recommend you to try to have the healthiest lifestyle as possible, don’t stress and drink a lot of water. that’s what I do.
And, yes, as LU said, diet and health are the most important!
      Good luck! 🙂

  7. Katie says:

My hair is really short, like off my neck short and it’s been this way for almost 5 years now and I’ve been loving it but here recently I’ve been wanting to grow it back out. I want to be able to do more stuff with my hair. What are some ways to get my hair to grow back fast? I know it’s obviously going to take time for it to grow but the I want something that will help it grow faster but healthy!

  8. Liz says:

My hair is breaking off not only in the shower & brush but it seems like I she’d like an animal. It was to the middle of my back but I had my husband chop it to the top of my neck.
I’m guessing my issue has a lot to do with the meds I take, one for headaches is actually for epilepsy. I’ve been to the Dr & she insists I’m fine. I’d have to beg to differ with her since when I run my fingers through my hair I feel it snapping off not just falling out. Finding your article gives me hope. I think I’ll be trying these vitamins again especially Folic acid.
Thanks so much for this information.

  16. Nancy says:

Please help. My hair has always been my pride and fucking joy. I figured since it is pretty damn healthy, it could deal with some bleach damage. And I figured the master stylist who did all the color-corrections would know how much would be too much. I was wrong, and now I want to burst into tears every time I look at my hair or touch it. I just don’t know what to do. my hair has also NEVER been shorter than this and it breaks and falls out. What should i do to regrow hair?

  17. Anon Y Mous says:

Just curious if there is anyone out there who has had a sudden loss of hair and used the vitamins listed here and what the results were. Someone I know started losing hair over a month ago and has had no new growth. How effective are the end results? Will she need to continue using the vitamins after hair growth is noticed? Just curious so we don’t have to keep getting tested with no results from doctors. So far, we’ve had no straight forward answers.

Lindsey I know that your comment was from a long time ago but I am wondering how you are doing and if you have had success in growing your hair out. I recently had my hair fall out and now it has finally grown down to my shoulders but I am researching all kinds of things to do to make it grow faster and am wondering if you found any solutions!

My hair has become to get thinner and thinner you can see my scalp, i have been taking biotin for about 5 years now nothing has changed. What other vitamins can i take to help me get my hair back the way it used to be.

  23. Rebecca says:

I have struggled with my hair for a long time now. I am quickly approaching my 40s and I have bad hair quality. Recently, I have also noticed that my hair has stopped growing as it used to. A few years ago I went to the salon on a monthly basis. Now, it takes me almost two months before I even need to cut my hair! I am desperate and I really need help right now. Hair is one of the most important parts of a woman and I don’t want to give up on this one. I went to the doctors but they didn’t found anything wrong with me. The exams I took showed that I am healthy and there’s no reason for this to even happen to me. Please, I really need hair advice urgently!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Tiffany says:

I have been trying to find something to help my hair for a long time and I found Hairburst. It’s a great supplements that helps strengthen my hair and decreased shedding. I have extremely damaged hair from having to rebleach after a purchased a product that ruined my hair to the point where it was rubber band hair and I’m seeing a difference in my hair already. This is really a great vitamin to help stimulate hair growth so for anyone who has lost their hair then this is for you!
