Oils for Hair

All hair care regimens that promise to make your hair look healthy and shiny and promote hair growth will make you apply oil to your hair and scalp at least once a week. The discussion below will introduce you to the most popular oils for hair.

Castor oil: Castor oil contains high concentration of omega-9 fatty acids. This oil can moisturize your hair, smooth and soften dry and flaky scalp and prevent hair breakage. Castor oil can also increase perceived hair thickness by making it a little darker. Another major constituent of castor oil is ricinoleic acid. Ricinoleic acid is an anti-fungal agent and thus makes castor oil a potent remedy for dandruff.

Olive oil: Olive oil can be used as a conditioner, a root stimulator and a hair moisturizer. It is an oil type rich in powerful antioxidants like phenol and vitamin E. The oil is also known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, which give it the ability of promoting hair re-growth by eliminating bacterial and fungal infections affecting the hair follicles and scalp. The fatty acids present in olive oil work by alleviating hair problems like dullness, frizz and split ends.

Oils for HairCoconut oil: Coconut oil is rich in vitamins E, K and iron. Adequate supply of these nutrients is essential for proper hair growth. Another major component found in coconut oil is lauric acid. Lauric acid gives this oil the ability to protect hair protein. The oil is known to have antifungal properties and is widely used to treat dandruff.

Jojoba oil: Jojoba oil is very “forgiving” and thus suitable for people with all hair types. Hair loss due to malnutrition is quite common and jojoba oil can be used to treat such conditions with ease. Jojoba oil improves blood circulation to the scalp, which increases essential nutrient and mineral supply to the scalp and hair follicles. Jojoba oil also helps in strengthening hair shafts and preventing hair breakage.

Almond oil: Almond oil is the most commonly used skin and hair oil out there. It belongs to a group of oils known as carrier oils, which means that they are well suited for “carrying” other products, such as essential oils. Almond oil is non-sticky, very easy to spread/apply and can be used on all hair types.

Clary sage and rosemary oils: Both of these essential oils are known for their ability to promote hair growth. According to experts, clary sage oil and rosemary oil work best when applied together. Rosemary oil, when applied to the scalp, dilates blood vessels and promotes cell division. This, in turn, stimulates hair growth. Clary sage oil, on the other hand, helps to alleviate split ends, which is a major cause of hindered hair growth. Many experts also suggest applying clary sage oil in combination with jojoba oil for having thick and healthy hair.
